Albin Countergambit

The Albin Countergambit appears when White plays the Queen's Gambit and Black, instead of simply supporting or capturing the offered pawn, answers by advancing the e-pawn to e5. A countergambit is an active reply in which the second player offers material. If White captures the e5-pawn with the queen pawn, Black can advance the d-pawn from d5 to d4.

That advanced black pawn on d4 is the strategic centerpiece of the opening. It gains space, meaning it controls territory that restricts White's pieces, interferes with some of White's development, and can support threats while Black brings pieces out quickly. The advantages Black receives for the pawn depend on maintaining activity and keeping the advanced pawn useful. If White blocks and attacks it while finishing development without concessions, the extra pawn becomes more important.

The ...e5 advance offers a pawn to draw White's d4-pawn away and transform the center.

The Albin can produce concrete tactics because a pawn has advanced so deeply, but it should not be learned as a collection of traps. The fundamental question is whether Black receives enough time and coordination for the material. It can look similar to the Budapest Gambit because of the early e-pawn advance to e5, but Black's d-pawn plays a very different role.
