Explanation
Piece improvement means making a piece contribute more to the position. It may involve moving a rook to a useful file, bringing a knight to a stable square, opening a diagonal for a bishop, or relocating a queen that is exposed and has no target.
A piece is better when it has useful mobility, attacks or defends relevant targets, and cooperates with the rest of the army. Moving toward enemy territory guarantees nothing. A piece may look active while remaining isolated, vulnerable to a gain of time, or obstructive to the other pieces' plan.
When there are no immediate threats, the recommends identifying the piece that contributes least and improving it. A , meaning a piece with no useful square or function, may require more than one move. It may need a multi-move route, a that opens its line, or a favorable exchange that removes it.
Improvement must be compared with the time available. A concrete opposing threat takes priority. When the position is stable, improving one piece can strengthen the whole army and prepare a pawn advance that opens lines or a later attack.
