Nepomniachtchi vs. Ding: fourth rapid game, Astana 2023
Ian Nepomniachtchi · Ding Liren · 2023-04-30 · 0-1
The first three rapid games were drawn. With each player on 1½ points and a time control of 25 minutes plus 10 seconds per move, a win would decide the title; another draw would send the tiebreak into blitz.
Explanation
On April 30, 2023, in Astana, another draw would have extended the World Championship into blitz. The fourteen classical games had ended 7-7, and the first three rapid games had also failed to separate Ian Nepomniachtchi and . One game remained at 25 minutes plus 10 seconds per move. Ding had Black; he did not need to win to remain in contention, but a win would end the match.
The game did not begin with an immediate combination. A maneuvering Ruy Lopez left Nepomniachtchi with a bishop shut in behind his pawns and Ding seeking activity in the center. When Black opened lines, he also gave White’s pieces room to emerge. That exchange of opportunities matters: neither player carried an undiminished advantage from the opening to resignation.
Playing on was not the same as winning
The image that defines this encounter came with 46...Rg6. Rather than move his king again and continue the cycle of checks, Ding interposed the rook and accepted its being pinned. As he explained afterward, he considered his king safer on h7. The decision had a concrete positional basis as well as competitive significance: keep the king there and retain chances to advance the pawns.
What followed prevents the victory from being told as an automatic reward for that choice. Ding coordinated threats, but the rook exchange eased White’s defensive task. Even with two black pawns well advanced, Nepomniachtchi again had drawing resources. Mark Crowther’s report identifies those late opportunities; they were not minor details in an uninterrupted march to victory.
The finish depended on a different task from the decision to play on: protecting the king from checks while the pawns forced White’s queen and bishop to defend separate points. The danger was not just promotion; attending to one pawn allowed other threats. Nepomniachtchi resigned after Black’s 68th move.
The 2½-1½ tiebreak score made Ding the first Chinese player to win the . Rapid games decided the title at stake in the classical match, not the World Rapid Championship. The game deserves to be remembered for both sides of its story: a visible, memorable choice to prolong the struggle, and the subsequent work, less easily captured in a single image, needed to turn that struggle into victory.
