A White system against the Caro-Kann where 3.f3 supports e4 and prepares an f-pawn recapture if Black exchanges.

This page is temporarily shown in English. Complete localization will be added in a later stage.

Explanation

The Caro-Kann prepares ...d5 with 1...c6 to attack White's e4-pawn. Instead of advancing e5 or exchanging on d5, White builds a center with pawns on d4 and e4 and plays 3.f3. The f2-pawn advances to f3 to support e4. If Black plays ...dxe4, White can answer fxe4 and retain two connected pawns on d4 and e4. This center claims space and can support an attack, but it requires time and careful handling.

The move f3 has concrete costs. The f3-square, normally useful for the g1-knight, is occupied by a pawn. Moving the f-pawn also changes the natural cover around White's king and may open dangerous diagonals. Black can capture on e4, play ...e6 to complete a solid structure, or use ...Qb6 to attack d4 and b2 with the queen.

Fantasy and Maróczy are names used for the same system in different catalogs. It is not automatically a gambit, a deliberate offer of material, meaning a pawn or piece, because White prepares a recapture and does not give up a pawn by definition. Compared with the , where White first develops the b1-knight, the Fantasy commits the f-pawn early. The also advances a pawn near the king, the h-pawn, but only after closing the center with e5.

Common confusions

Fantasy versus Maróczy

Both names can identify the 3.f3 system against the Caro-Kann. In this context, they are not separate variations.
