Two Knights Defense

The Two Knights Defense begins 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Nf6 and belongs to the Italian Game. Instead of matching White's bishop with ...Bc5, Black moves the g8-knight to f6. This develops a piece, meaning it leaves its starting square for a useful post, while also attacking White's pawn on e4.

The Italian Game before Black's reply

White's bishop is already on c4 and Black's knight on c6 supports the center. Black can still choose between ...Bc5 and ...Nf6.

White now chooses the character of the game. The direct 4.Ng5 attacks f7, a sensitive pawn because only the king protects it at the start, and some lines enter the Fried Liver Attack. The central break 4.d4 can transpose, meaning reach the same position by a different move order, into lines related to the Scotch Gambit. The quieter 4.d3 keeps more tension in the center.

The position does not force a tactical battle. Each of White's fourth moves pursues a different plan.

Recovering the pawn is not the only priority

After 4.Ng5 d5 5.exd5, Black must choose between seeking activity and recovering the pawn immediately.

1. 5...Na5 attacks the bishop on c4 and avoids the specific Fried Liver sequence.
2. 5...Nxd5 recovers the pawn but allows 6.Nxf7 and enters the Fried Liver Attack.

The name refers to Black's two developed knights on c6 and f6. It does not mean that a sacrifice is compulsory. Sharp tactics are common after Ng5 or d4, but slower maneuvering games are also possible when both sides develop without opening the center immediately.
