Lag

Also known as: Network lag, Network latency

Delay between a player's action and its arrival at the server or the return of the response.

Explanation

Lag is a noticeable delay in the communication of an online game. When a player moves, the information must travel to the server, be processed, and return to the device with the updated state. When that trip takes time, the board, clock, or opponent reply can appear delayed.

Total delay may combine server processing with the network round trip. Physical distance, unstable wireless service, congestion, packet loss, where some information must be sent again, or a poor route between providers can increase it. A connection with high download speed can therefore still have poor latency.

Lag becomes especially visible with only seconds on the clock. A move made in time on the local screen must still reach the server, which normally maintains the official clock. Some platforms apply to restore part of the time attributed to transmission, but that correction has limits.

Lag does not mean that the connection has disappeared. A breaks the link; with lag, messages continue to travel but arrive late. Lag is not proof of manipulation by the opponent either. Diagnosis should compare server status with the player's own latency and check whether other services show the same problem.

Common confusions

Lag and internet speed

Speed measures how much data can be transferred. Latency measures how long a message takes to travel and return; they are different properties.

Lag and move confirmation

deliberately adds a step before submission. It may feel slow, but it is not a network problem.
