Separated-pawns annotation symbol

⯻ is Unicode character U+2BFB. U+2BFB is its code point, the stable number identifying the character in Unicode, and SEPARATED SYMBOL is its standardized name. Its documented chess use is to mark separated pawns. The older form ⚯ also appears. The broad idea is that some friendly pawns stand apart instead of forming a chain or group that can readily support itself.

Terminology is not perfectly uniform across systems. Unicode and Chess Informant use separated pawns, while Scid's suggested-sign list associates ⚯ with an isolated pawn, strictly defined as a pawn with no friendly pawn on either adjacent file. A specific database or book may therefore require its own symbol key.

The mark flags a structural feature, not an automatic verdict. Separated pawns may need piece protection and become targets, but they can also control useful squares or advance effectively in the right position.
