Damiano's mate

The basic picture combines a queen, a deeply advanced pawn, and a king with almost no room. The queen moves next to the king and gives check, but the king cannot capture it because the attacking pawn protects it. The defender's own pieces or pawns occupy the remaining escape squares.

The queen is untouchable on h7

The queen uses an outer square beside the king as a mating base. The advanced pawn makes it untouchable, covers another escape square, and a black piece blocks the remaining exit.

1. The queen on h7 checks the king on g8 from the outer side.
2. The pawn on g6 protects the queen on h7 and controls f7.
3. The black rook on f8 occupies the only remaining escape square.

The pawn makes the whole net work. It supports the queen and often controls another square near the king. This is why a pawn that has reached the enemy king's shelter can be far more dangerous than an ordinary pawn usually seems.

The name is not used identically in every manual. Some sources include a version in which a bishop supports the queen, while others treat that as a separate variation. In this glossary, the core of Damiano's mate is a queen supported by an advanced pawn. Its closest relative is Lolli's mate, which uses similar coordination in a different arrangement around a king sheltered behind its pawns.
