Lolli's mate

Lolli's mate exploits a weakened king shelter. An attacking pawn reaches deep into enemy territory and creates a safe entry square for the queen. The queen enters the king's shelter, checks at close range, and cannot be captured because the pawn protects it.

The Queen Cannot Be Dislodged

The net combines a close-range queen, a protected base, and a pawn shelter that becomes a barrier.

1. From c7, the queen checks the king on c8 and controls the escape squares b8 and d8.
2. The pawn on b6 protects c7, so the king cannot capture the queen.
3. Black's pawns on b7 and d7 occupy the two lower escape squares and complete the confinement.

The pawn performs one decisive job: it turns a square beside the king into a safe base for the queen. The queen covers much of the remaining area, while the defender's own pawns restrict their king. A small breach in the group of pawns protecting the king can therefore allow a decisive queen invasion.

Merely placing a queen and pawn near the king is not enough. The position must also rule out capturing the queen, blocking the check, and escaping. The pattern is closely related to Damiano's mate, and the labels overlap in some sources.
