Explanation

Compensation exists when a player accepts a disadvantage and receives resources that may balance it. The most common case is giving up , such as a pawn or rook, in return for activity, threats, or a favorable position. Compensation is not the act of giving something up; it is the value obtained in return.

Common forms

  • Faster development, with more pieces activated from their starting squares.
  • An attack on the king or threats that force defensive replies.
  • More space, meaning more useful territory, better squares, or stronger , when pieces support one another in a common task.
  • Lasting damage to the opponent's pawn structure, the way its pawns are arranged, or friendly pawns with strong chances to advance.

Compensation is adequate only when these factors truly counterbalance the loss. It may be a that must be used quickly, or a that lasts longer. If the threats disappear and the opponent keeps the extra material without new weaknesses, the compensation was probably insufficient. A , a deliberate material concession, must therefore be judged by its consequences, not by how attractive the idea looks.

Common confusions

Compensation and advantage

Compensation answers a specific disadvantage and may only restore balance. An advantage exists when one side has better overall prospects after every important factor is considered.
