Explanation

A novelty is a move or sequence that departs from established knowledge in an opening, the early phase of the game, that has already been studied. It is also called a theoretical novelty. Opening theory is the accumulated body of games, analysis, and evaluations concerning that early phase.

Books and databases may mark a novelty with N or TN, short for theoretical novelty. The label depends on the available records. A move may look new in an incomplete database, have appeared through a different move order, or have been analyzed privately without ever being played in public.

What makes a novelty significant

Being new does not make a move good. A meaningful novelty creates a real problem, improves a known line, or changes the practical evaluation of a position. It may come from , analysis done before a game, or be found over the board.

A novelty often appears after a , a well-known reference position from which fresh decisions begin. It does not have to create a different opening or reject principles such as , moving them from their starting squares so they can participate, or , contesting the central squares. Its value depends on the resulting idea and how well it survives later analysis.

Common confusions

Novelty and a new opening

A novelty is usually one move or idea inside a known opening, not an entirely new system.

Novelty and home preparation

The novelty is the new move or idea. Home preparation is the prior research that may discover it.
