Rook and two pawns versus rook ending

The two extra pawns make this ending a frequent win, but they do not guarantee victory. The defending rook can check from a distance, attack the pawns from behind, or sacrifice itself for them as they advance. The ending is therefore not just rook and pawn versus rook theory applied twice.

Coordination is the first thing to assess. Connected pawns are pawns on neighboring vertical columns, called files, that can support each other; they usually advance more effectively than doubled pawns on the same file. The attacking king's proximity, both rooks' activity, the defending king's position, and the available checking distance all matter.

Main plans

• The stronger side normally improves the king before pushing. One pawn may serve as shelter from checks while the other prepares to advance.
• The defender seeks immediate activity through side or rear checks, attacks on the rearmost pawn, and chances to give up the rook for both pawns.
• A favorable conversion trades one pawn or some activity to reach a genuinely won single-pawn ending. Tools such as the rule of five can help evaluate some resulting positions.

A small change in placement can reverse the result. With exactly the same material, moving a king one square or allowing one extra check may turn a win into a draw. The position must be calculated rather than judged by material alone.
